چکیده

We demonstrate highly efficient transmission of light around sharp corners in photonic bandgap waveguides. Numerical simulations reveal complete transmission at certain frequencies, and very high transmission s.95%d over wide frequency ranges. High transmission is observed even for 90± bends with zero radius of curvature, with a maximum transmission of 98% as opposed to 30% for analogous conventional dielectric waveguides. We propose a simple one-dimensional scattering theory model with a dynamic frequency-dependent well depth to describe the transmission properties. [S0031-9007(96)01522-0]

Sharp bends in photonic crystal waveguides as nonlinear Fano resonators.

We demonstrate that high transmission through sharp bends in photonic crystal waveguides can be described by a simple model of the Fano resonance where the waveguide bend plays a role of a specific localized defect. We derive effective discrete equations for two types of the waveguide bends in two-dimensional photonic crystals and obtain exact analytical solutions for the resonant transmission a...

Polarization-independent linear waveguides in 3D photonic crystals.

Using a symmetry-based approach, we have designed polarization-independent waveguides in a 3D photonic crystal. A comprehensive series of numerical experiments, involving the propagation of pulsed signals through long straight waveguide sections and sharp bends, quantitatively evaluates the bend-transmission coefficient over the entire bandwidth of the corresponding guided modes. High (approxim...

Effective equations for photonic-crystal waveguides and circuits.

We suggest a novel conceptual approach to describing the properties of waveguides and circuits in photonic crystals, based on effective discrete equations that include long-range interaction effects. We demonstrate, through the example of sharp waveguide bends, that our approach is very effective and accurate for the study of bound states and transmission spectra of photonic-crystal circuits an...

Guiding Light Through Sharp Bends Using Two Dimensional Photonic Crystals

The current effort to make integrated optical chips requires guiding light around sharp corners with a radius of curvature on the order of a wavelength. Light propagates in conventional waveguides as a result of total internal reflection at the interface between the high-refractive index guiding layer and its low-index surroundings. However, bends in the conventional index-contrast waveguides a...

Transmission of slow light through photonic crystal waveguide bends.

The spectral dependence of the bending loss of cascaded 60 degrees bends in photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides is explored in a slab-type silicon-on-insulator system. An ultralow bending loss of (0.05 +/- 0.03) dB/bend is measured at wavelengths corresponding to the nearly dispersionless transmission regime. In contrast, the PhC bend is found to become completely opaque for wavelengths correspon...
